Affleck Says No to Daredevil

Talking with the press at the London premiere of "Hollywoodland", actor Ben Affleck confirmed that he's not keen on the idea of a "Daredevil" sequel.

"By playing a superhero in Daredevil, I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero" Affleck told Slash Film.

He added "Wearing a costume was a source of humiliation for me and something I wouldn't want to do again soon". Hmm, one wonders if we should be sad or happy.

Zune site online

The Zune website is now live - check it out here.

The Zune is Microsoft's attempt at an "iPod-killer". Although it has some pretty nifty tricks up its sleeve, I seriously doubt that the Zune will achieve anywhere near the iPod's level of success - not in this generation, at least.

Blur hopeful for a Coxon ending

Blur hope to reunite with Graham Coxon for one last album, Alex James has revealed.

The bass player believes that the band - in its original line-up - is "too good a thing to let it disintegrate".

And James revealed that he is on good terms with the estranged guitarist, who left the band acrimoniously in 2002.

He told the BBC: "I've got high hopes that Blur will have a happy four-piece ending. I think it would be a shame if it didn't really. I think we'd all like to make another record. We'd all like to do it with Graham. I've been talking to Graham a bit and hopefully I can persuade him. I'm going to have to beg him though."

Revenge of the Nerds follows the Halo Movie

First Halo was shut down. Now Revenge of the Nerds is being shut down. What's the world coming to? Location problems have forced the production of Revenge Of The Nerds to shut down.

Fox was told four days before the shoot was to start on Oct. 9. But after trying to find other colleges in Atlanta the producers decided to put the production on hiatus and start over with a new plan.

Revenge Of The Nerds, which is a remake of the 1984 cult film of the same name, was to be shot on Emory campus in Atlanta, but apparently, one of the snooty deans decided to rent the original and didn't like what he saw! Allegedly.

Nintendo Wii on South Park

Nintendo Wii's become the latest videogame-related thing to feature in an episode of South Park.

In one of the latest in the current run of series ten shows, Cartman ends up trying to freeze himself in ice to bypass the three weeks that remain before the console's American launch.

The episode begins with him waiting outside a shop with giant Wii posters hung around, pacing impatiently. "It's like waiting for Christmas... times a thousand," he tells his Mum. Don't worry - it's actually quite funny.

Casino Royale theme video released

Click here to watch the official video of "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell, the official theme for the new hotly-anticipated James Bond film Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig in the title role.

De Niro and 50 Cent - together at last!

Here's a test for you. Take a pen, get a piece of paper and write down - right now - the top three movie star partnerships you'd like to see. Any combination you like - it can be DiCaprio/Cage, Jackman/Pitt, or Natalie Portman and Lucy Liu (steady now), for example.

Done that? Good. Now, did anyone write down 'Robert De Niro and 50 Cent'? Nope. Didn't think so. But it hasn't stopped Hollywood types from MAKING IT HAPPEN!

Yes, indeed. The man who said 'Are you talkin' to me?' is going to team up with the man who said, and we quote, 'I'm into having sex, I ain't into making love/So come give me a hug if you into to getting rubbed'.

Beautiful. This is clearly a match made in heaven. The film that's bringing these two titans together is entitled New Orleans, a cop thriller set in... well, you can work it out.

Borat's book banned in the US

Borat’s first book has been banned by shops — because it is full of photos of naked women.

The spoof reporter’s memoir has more than 100 snaps of models supposed to be women from his Kazakhstan homeland.

British publisher Boxtree has snapped up the book for the UK. But publishing insiders claim American retail chains will NOT sell the book.

A source said: “Yank publishers know this book is just going to cause too much trouble. Some of the photos leave nothing to the imagination. Everything, and I really mean everything, is on display.”

US soap joins forces with Marvel Comics

A bit of a weird one, this:

American TV soap opera Guiding Light has teamed up with Marvel Comics to give one of its characters superpowers.

The delightfully named "Harley Davidson Cooper" character was given the powers to levitate and conduct electricity in an episode shown yesterday.

"Joining forces with Marvel is such a natural fit for us because comic books and soap operas have so much in common," claimed the soap's head writer, David Kreizman. "Both feature long-running characters and larger-than-life stories that appeal to a loyal and passionate fan base. We hope that our viewers will be excited to see their favorites in the pages of a comic book and that Marvel fans will tune in to see how we put our twist on a classic superhero story."

PS3 and 360 "look even"

Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack subscribes to the view that PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are roughly equal.

Speaking to Mercury News' Dean Takahashi, Dyack said, "Maybe the PS3 has more processing power. The 360 has more available memory. It's pretty much a net, net. The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even."

And even though the PS3 potentially has that greater processing power, "you have to get the timing right". Not the easiest thing in the world.

Virtue before se7en

Bloody Disgusting reports that they have a copy of treatment for a film called "Virtue" which is currently being sent around to different writers.

What makes it so special though is that not only is the story is a prequel to David Fincher's twisted 1995 serial killer thriller "Se7en", but that revelation won't come in until the third act of the film.

Indeed the film will not be marketed as a prequel at all it would seem. A mini-review of the treatment is expected to go up soon.

Oooops... Microsofts 360 update may have caused a problem or two!

Since yesterday's update, there are numerous reports about 360s being bricked. Some people suspect that this is being done by Microsoft intentionally to stop modders and hackers. Xbox Scene thinks it has more to do with certain combinations of hardware and firmware. That would explain why some people are reporting problems even with new, unmodded 360s. Other readers have informed X360F that they are unable to even complete the update download itself. Since the update can't complete, the 360 won't even allow users to play offline games for "security" reasons. It's worth noting that Microsoft is definitely aware of these issues.

Having heard about these problems, we tested our own 2005 360 with a few levels of Lego Star Wars II -- purely for research, of course. So far, we haven't encountered any problems since the update.

The Black Parade Musical?

My Chemical Romance plan to go the whole way with theatrical new album 'The Black Parade' - by turning it into a musical.

Asked whether they have plans to follow in the footsteps of mentors Green Day, who are working on movie treatments for their 2004 blockbuster 'American Idiot', singer Gerard Way told NME: "I think ['The Black Parade'] needs to be something.

"If not a play then a musical. It's such a visual thing. I think it would make a great animated film, something experimental would really work for this."

Xbox 360 Update adds DRM "features"

You may have have noticed a new addition to the 360's dashboard since the update this morning. Media is now tagged with a "Does not expire" message. Obviously this could only mean one thing, DRM for downloads.

Our best guess is that new media downloads will now contain expiration dates after they hit your hard drive from the market place. This means you wont be able to continue playing that same demo over and over again without finally going out to buy the game. It's a smart more for MS to help aid in the purchase of games after they are pimped on the Marketplace. It is also a win for magazines like OXM, who rely on demos to boost their own magazine sales with promises of exclusive demos. Now these demos could be considered more valuable since the content on the disc can not be deleted.

This could also be an indication of things to come for the Marketplace. It would make perfect sense to enable this feature for future downloads of music, TV, and movies as well. Most journalists know that the 360 would be a perfect platform for delivering more then just gaming content, and with the Sony PS3 around the corner this could be a first move into the entertainment download arena. I suppose only time will tell.

Al Capone Returns

Production Weekly is reporting that Brian DePalma is set to direct The Untouchables: Capone Rising, set as a prequel to his 1987 hit film about lawman Eliot Ness’ takedown of Al Capone.

The project is eyeing a June production start. Writing duo Brian Koppelman and David Levien penned the script for “Capone Rising,” which charts the Chicago mob boss’ rise to power and his relationship with police detective and nemesis Jimmy Malone, the character played in the original film by Sean Connery. The film starts on the eve of Capone’s arrival, and while Malone wasn’t the most corrupt cop, he operated at a time when every cop was on the take. Once he crosses paths with Capone, he sees a level of violence and criminality that causes him to have a moral awakening. “The Untouchables” was also a 1959-63 TV series starring Robert Stack as Ness. Both the series and the De Palma feature were based on the novel of the same name by Oscar Fraley.

the PS3 box is massive

and everyone moaned at the size of the original xbox...

Hugh Jackman talks Wolverine

"I don't want the film to appear at all like X-Men 4 in disguise. I want it to feel like a very fresh, whole new character piece. I want it to be a character movie. And by the end of the movie, I want it to be that you definitely knew who this guy was. Cool action, great characters, but ultimately that you totally know who Wolverine is. Like Mad Max and Dirty Harry. Characters I loved. He's a good guy, but he's not a nice guy. He's just the guy you want on your side. [David] really got that. He's one of the best character writers in Hollywood. He totally got it."

Halo Movie Postponed

Yes Wingnut Films confirm it...

As was previously confirmed, we deeply regret that both Universal and Fox did not choose to move forward with financing the Halo film under the original terms of the agreement. At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen. We are fully supportive of Director Neill Blomkamp's vision of the film. Neill is a tremendously gifted filmmaker and his preliminary work on Halo is truly awe-inspiring. While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait.

Halo 3 Sneak Peek

This from 1up

What are these new Brutish weapons? What's a Spike Rifle...or a Spike Grenade?
The Mongoose (the once-scrapped ATV from Halo/Halo 2) is back: Who wants to ride Brokeback?
Halo 3 will have three retail SKUs: standard, collector's edition, and Legendary. Guess which one comes with a helmet and four discs of content?
Adding bumpers to the 360 controller means there's some extra real estate for Bungie to play with. Now the left bumper reloads your dual-wielded weapon and the right bumper is the normal reload. What does X do, though? Mum.
Starting weapon: Bungie thinks they have the "perfect" starting weapon in Halo 3. It's not the pistol, the battle rifle, or the SMG...and it's pretty familiar. How does the new Assault Rifle play?
One of the new maps, Valhalla, is being called "the new Blood Gulch" -- but this isn't another coat of new paint on the Combat Evolved classic. This is, from-the-ground-up, a brand-new map. How is it?
What if you could save your own movies from Halo 3's single- and multiplayer gameplay and then rewatch them? In Halo 3, you can.

Xbox 360 dashboard update

Microsoft has finally seen fit to release the details of its Xbox 360 dashboard update. Scheduled for release the morning of October 31st -- yes, that's tomorrow -- the update will add the much-talked about 1080p / HD DVD support, as well as the ability to play WMV files from a connected PC, disc, or USB storage device. Currently, users can only stream video from connected Windows Media Center PCs, but any XP machine running Windows Media Connect or Windows Media Player 11 should be able to do it post-update, as demonstrated during a press conference in Japan with several 720p-encoded videos. This compares to the PlayStation 3's recently-revealed compatibility with MPEG-4 and other video files, but so far neither has announced support for DivX / Xvid and Media Transcode 360 still requires Media Center. Apparently only 84 things needed fixing this time, down from the 125 in the spring update, including the option to automatically download demos of new Xbox Live Arcade titles, Zune media streaming, wireless headset support, XNA Game Studio Express and numerous improvements to video playback and menu handling.

Horror film Saw III has proved the most popular movie in North American cinemas during the weekend before Halloween, as its predecessors did in 2004 and 2005.
It took an estimated $34.3m (£18m), knocking period drama The Prestige, which took $9.6m (£5m), down to third.

Martin Scorsese's mob tale The Departed was number two for the third successive week, generating $9.8m (£5.2m).

The only other new entry in the chart was Running With Scissors, a drama about a bizarre family, at number 10.

Universal Pictures Wins Bruno Bidding

Universal Pictures has won the intense bidding war for "Bruno," Sacha Baron Cohen's follow-up movie to "Borat."

Sources said that Universal is paying $42.5 million, beating out such other contenders as DreamWorks, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. Pictures for the worldwide rights to the film (HR 10/27). The price includes the production budget of the film, rumored to be in the $20 million-$25 million range. Also included is a significant backend component, believed to be the 15% range.

The price has raised eyebrows in Hollywood because Baron Cohen's much-hyped "Borat" has yet to open. Despite much advance praise for "Borat," distributor Fox scaled back its Friday opening to about 800 theaters because it is concerned that the movie wasn't registering high enough in audience-awareness tracking.

Bruno next for Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen has picked his next project and is currently shopping the Borat follow-up to studios.

Universal Pictures, according to industry insider mag the Hollywood Reporter, has extended a $42 million offer to Baron Cohen for the movie rights to Bruno, a film based on another of the actor's alter egos, a gay Austrian fashion show presenter and "the voice of Austrian youth TV." Bruno is the last of Cohen's outrageous characters to make the jump to the big screen.
THR adds that DreamWorks, Sony, Fox and Warner. Bros. are all also interested in the project.

Bruno is expected to start shooting in the summer. The film, which Baron Cohen is co-writing with Borat collaborator Jay Roach, is still in need of a director.

The character originated on Da Ali G Show in the segment Funkyzeit mit Bruno (Funkytime with Bruno).

  • To load links into the same window (rather than a new window), add the following to the end of the URL:
    &openLinks=same

For example, with these options combined you may have the following URL:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/CultPress?format=sigpro&nItems=10&displayExcerpts=true&displayDate=true&openLinks=same
