PS3 hits America

Patient American gamers are buying Sony's new PlayStation 3 console after queuing in some cases for many days.

Four hundred thousand machines have gone on sale, following its debut in Japan last week.

Many shops opened at midnight to sell the console, which costs $499 (£264) to $599 depending on the model.

Kaz Hirai, chief executive of Sony's American games division said: "We're going to try and get as many units into the North American market as possible."

Some gamers cued for the sole purpose of selling their console for profit. "I'm gonna sell mine," Mr Salterio said, estimating he would make anywhere between $1,500 (£794) and $4,000 (£2,119).

The Thing set for Remake

Variety reports that Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's classic frightner 'the Thing' The script will be written by Battlestar Gallactica exec producer Ronald D. Moore.

Carpenter's film continued the storyline of the Howard Hawks-directed "The Thing From Another World." That 1951 film starred James Arness as an alien monster that wiped out workers at an Army radar station.

Carpenter's film opened with a team arriving to find that encampment has been wiped out. The alien moved from the body of one team member to another, so it was never quite clear who the villain was.

The producers said they consider the new film to be more "a companion piece" to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake.

Ebay bans Imported PS3s

eBay.co.uk has banned listings in Europe of Japan or US model PlayStation 3s, declaring that only consoles bought within the European Union can be re-sold there.

Last month, Hong Kong-based import game seller Lik-Sang closed down after losing a law suit against Sony for selling Japanese PSPs to European consumers.

Sony announced shortly afterwards that it would be move to stop any other "grey importing" of its products into Europe, which led to another major online importer, Play-Asia.com, suspending all orders of Sony products to the EU.

Almost as soon as pre-orders of the PS3 became available in the US, ads from re-sellers started popping up on eBay, some asking for as much as $100,000 for the console. eBay removed the ads, telling GameSpot, "the seller must have legal ownership of the product. As such, pre-ordered items cannot be sold on the site."

Borat defends himself

In a recent magazine article for the Rolling Stone, Sacha Baron Cohen has said "The joke is not on Kazakhstan," he said. "I think the joke is on people who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist -- who believe that there's a country where homosexuals wear blue hats and the women live in cages and they drink fermented horse urine."

He said he always had faith in the audience to realize this was a fictitious country and the mere purpose of it was to allow people to expose their own prejudices.

"I think part of the movie shows the absurdity of holding any form of racial prejudice, whether it's hatred of African-Americans or of Jews," said Baron Cohen, a devout Jew who keeps Kosher and observes the Sabbath when he can.

Bond beats China's film censor

Variety reports an amazing turn of events - James Bond appears to have won over one of his toughest adversaries yet - China's film censor. The Film Board has passed 007's latest outing "Casino Royale" for release in China - the first time Ian Fleming's master spy has been seen in Chinese cinemas.

Pic will screen on January 30th, according to Sony Pictures in China.

"We are extremely pleased that the film has passed and expect it to be one of the highest grossing films next year in China," said Li Chow, Sony Pictures' general manager in China.

Chinese auds are familiar with 007 through pirated copies, but none of the earlier films in the franchise have had a bigscreen release and getting approval for the pic marks a major success for Sony in China.

Wikipedia open for business in China once more

China's year-long block on the US-based online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has been lifted, activists say.

The Chinese-language version of the website was reported to be fully accessible this week.

The press freedom group Reporters without Borders praised the bosses of Wikipedia, who they said had "always refused to go in for self-censorship".

Other internet giants have been criticised for censoring their services or complying with strict Chinese rules.

Wikipedia - which allows users to add to and edit the website's information - was becoming increasingly popular in China until it was blocked in late 2005.

China has strict laws on internet use and blocks content it deems a threat, including references to the Tiananmen Square massacre and notable dissidents.

It also blocks the BBC News website.

Play.com have the much anticipated Bungie game, Halo 3 as a 24th November 2007 release date, i wonder what truth there is to this?

Michael Jackson Booed on Return

Michael Jackson made his return to the London stage last night (November 15) - but fans were left disappointed.

The star was widely tipped to perform his classic 'Thriller' at the World Music Awards event at Earls Court, but only managed to sing a few lines of his charity hit 'We Are The World'.

Jackson was at the ceremony to collect a Diamond Award for selling more than 100 million albums, as well as a Guinness World Record award for sales of his 1982 album 'Thriller'. But fans outside the venue were left fuming when Jackson failed to greet them and then revealed he wouldn't be performing - despite many reports stating he would sing live in the British capital for the first time in nine years.

In the end, Jackson did make it onstage to join a gospel choir performance of the 1985 UK Number One he co-wrote with Lionel Richie as a US response to Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. But he only sang a couple of lines, leading to boos from the half-full arena.

Wii have 400,000 units!

Nintendo will offer four times as many machines as Sony when it launches its Wii console in Japan on 2 December.

The Japanese video game maker said it will ship almost 400,000 units of its Wii console, compared to 100,000 for Sony's PlayStation 3.

However Nintendo has not said how many consoles it will make available in the US where the Wii debuts on 19 November.

The launch of the Wii will see the big games makers Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo going head to head.

The Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 will compete for attention on the shelves this Christmas.

Wireless Electricity?

Madness I say, why can't they invent me hover boots?

US researchers have outlined a relatively simple system that could deliver power to devices such as laptop computers or MP3 players without wires.

The concept exploits century-old physics and could work over distances of many metres, the researchers said.

Although the team has not built and tested a system, computer models and mathematics suggest it will work.

Need a cheap, small DVD player? Don't buy a Wii... yet!

Digital media company Sonic is working on a software-based DVD playback engine that will be included in a version of the Nintendo Wii due out in 2007.

However, that means early versions of the Wii purchased this year won’t have the DVD playback function.

The CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator is already licensed by companies such as Adobe and Microsoft, and the software is used in everything from consumer electronics, PCs, kiosks and automotive entertainment systems, to music download services.

Bungie's Halo Announcements

Bungie promised they would make some special announcements to coincide with Halo's 5th Anniversary and so here they are - and, frankly, they are a little... disappointing.

Maybe you were expecting in-game footage of Halo 3, or the launch of Bungie's Marathon on Xbox Live Arcade, or possibly even a playable demo of Halo 3. Don't hold your breath.

The first announcement is of the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta Test. Next Spring, Bungie opens the Halo 3 multiplayer beta to Xbox 360 gamers, allowing fans to try out an unspecified number of maps and game modes and to help Bungie make the strongest online game possible.

The second announcement is of a new Map Pack for Halo 2 on Xbox 360. These maps will be released exclusively on the Live Marketplace in the Spring.

And finally, there will be a new 60-second teaser of Halo 3 shown during an American Football game (ESPN's Monday Night Football game featuring the Panthers against the Eagles, to be precise) on December 4.

And, er, that's it.

Halo 3 Goodies coming?

On the company's most recent Weekly Update, which is posted every Friday, community manager Frank O' Connor says the following: "A bunch of stuff is going down to celebrate the fifth anniversary of a little game we like to call Halo... Next year, Halo 3 will conclude the story arc begun all those years ago and next week, we'll take a long lingering look at the series to date. There will also be some pretty BIG surprises and maybe announcements. Who can say?"

New trailer perhaps, ingame footage? maps? Official release date?

I want to see the packaging design, i bet its going to be special this year after teasing us with a semi-nice metal tin for Halo 2.

Wii have Locked down Wikipedia! and other Consoles!

Web encyclopedia Wikipedia--which allows anyone to write or edit its entries--has locked down its pages relating to Sony and Nintendo's next-generation consoles after continued vandalism.

A series of less-than-impartial edits over the last few weeks has led to the temporary lockdown to "protect" the entries, in the hope that the virtual vandals will lose interest by the time the pages are reopened to changes.

Users have been hijacking the site's entries to add what Wikipedia refers to as "funny" edits. Top of the list is the Nintendo Wii--a name that pranksters seem to find especially entertaining.

Last week the complete Nintendo company page was replaced with the phrase "Nintendo Sucks!!!!!!!!!" briefly before the Web site reloaded the original entry. Previous vandalism efforts include someone doodling on a Hitler moustache and horns on the photograph for the entry for Bill Gates, and the sentence "Microsoft is Zomg T3h Suck0r!!!!!!" briefly replacing the computer software company's page. via: Gamespot

The Queen due to attend Casino Royale Premiere

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend the world premiere of the James Bond film Casino Royale in London's Leicester Square later.

The movie is an adaptation of Ian Fleming's first Bond novel and is one of the few without gadget-maker Q or much-loved secretary Miss Moneypenny.

Early reviews have been positive, with many critics impressed by Daniel Craig's performance in the lead role.

The 38-year-old has said all Bond films have "something special about them".

Dr No and From Russia with Love were two of his favourite movies, he told BBC News, and he had particular respect for one of his predecessors, Sir Sean Connery.

Radiohead's Thom Yorke's artwork to go on show

Artwork allegedly by Thom Yorke and collaborator Stanley Donwood is set to be exhibited.

Held in Barcelona from November 23 to December 16, the exhibition is entitled "Stanley Donwood & Dr. Tchock: Paintings, Etc."

Although not confirmed by Yorke, it is commonly held that 'Dr. Tchock' is in fact a pseudonym of the Radiohead frontman. Other pseudonyms believed to have been used by Yorke for artwork purposes include 'Tchocky''The White Chocolate Farm'.

The exhibition will feature artwork from the Radiohead's "Kid A'', "Amnesiac" and "Hail To The Thief"', among other pieces.

The paintings, created between 1999 and 2005, are accompanied by the publication of a full-colour book entitled "Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book".

The exhibition is held at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona. More information can be found on Stanley Donwood's website, Slowly Downward.

Borat is a 'great' global 'success'

Sacha Baron Cohen's hit film Borat has now taken over $110 million in the worldwide box office according to sources.

With a reported budget of $18 million Borat seems to be sitting on a cash cow!

I remember some ba**ard pushing me out of the way at the 360 launch, they didn't have any then either, what a fool he must of looked running towards the John Lewis games counter only to get rejected, i walked - naturally.

The CP Borat Review

I've been a fan of Borat for a long time and hearing that Sacha Baron Cohen was turning his comic creation into a movie was just incredible. I thought it would be a movie that would never make it to the Cinemas and only survive on DVD but luckily for us the hype was intense and made the movie a 'great success'...
